Woof Woof Wisdom: Top Tips for New Pet Sitters

So you wanna be a pet sitter?

Amazing! It’s a fantastic way to get your daily dose of furry cuteness, but before you dive headfirst into a world of wagging tails and slobbery kisses, there are a few things to consider. Consider this your ultimate guide to becoming a pawsome pet sitter!

Building Your Bonafides:

  1. Practice Makes Perfect: Start with friends and family! Pet sitting for those you know builds trust and gets you experience (and references!).
  2. Branch Out Beyond Apps: Don’t limit yourself! Create a simple website, advertise on local Facebook groups and Nextdoor – word-of-mouth recommendations are gold!
  3. Be Your Own Boss: Insurance is a must, and it shows pet owners you’re serious.

Meeting the Furry Fam:

This one is HUGE. Meeting the owner and their pet before booking is absolutely essential. It’s a chance to get a feel for everyone’s personalities and make sure it’s a good fit. Think of it as vetting each other – you want happy humans and happy hounds (or kitties, or whatever furry friend you’ll be caring for)!

  1. First Impressions Matter: Always have an initial meet-and-greet with the pet and owner. This ensures everyone feels comfortable and you can assess the situation.
  2. Be Prepared: Get contact info – vet, emergency contact, and of course, the owner themselves!
  3. Knowledge is Power: Check out resources like Pet Sitters International and National Association of Professional Pet Sitters – they’ve got tons of helpful info!

The Reality Check:

  1. Expect the Unexpected: Sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem. Be prepared for the occasional “housebroken” pup with an accident or a supposedly social dog that turns into Mr. Grumpy Gills.
  2. Communication is Key: Stress clear communication with the owner. Unannounced late pickups or medication surprises are no fun for anyone.
  3. Ask a Lot of Questions: The more details you get upfront, the smoother things will go. Don’t be afraid to be thorough!

Price with Pride:

This might sound counterintuitive, but trust me – don’t undervalue yourself! It’s tempting to slash your prices to compete with others on the app, but remember, the clients who prioritize rock-bottom rates often come with, well, rock-bottom experiences.

This past weekend was a real eye-opener.

I kept my prices low to be competitive, and let’s just say it backfired. The house alarm went off at 3 am because I, you know, had to use the bathroom!
Turns out the owner never mentioned a security system, let alone the codes (creepy, right?).
And to top it all off, she had cameras everywhere – not exactly the warm welcome I was expecting. Honestly, for the overnight stay and the sheer amount of drama, the $30 just wasn’t worth it.

Quality Over Quantity:

This whole experience solidified my motto: quality over quantity.

You want clients who are upfront, respectful, and appreciative of the care you provide. Don’t be afraid to set fair prices that reflect your time and effort. The good ones will find you!

So, there you have it! A few lessons learned (the hard way!) from this pet sitter. By following these tips and prioritizing quality connections, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a pet-sitting pro in no time!

Skip the Apps and Build Your Pawsome Pet Sitting Business!

Forget the app hassle! Building a successful pet sitting business can be done on your own. Here’s the lowdown from a 10-year pro: focus on amazing customer service and let word-of-mouth work its magic. Get yourself insured, whip up a contract, and build an online presence with a website and Google Page. Top it all off with a professional polo (think trust and approachability) and you’re ready to attract pawsome clients! It’s that easy (well, almost – dedication goes a long way too!).

P.S. I hear you! Apps aren’t for everyone. I found my fur-bulous clientele through Nextdoor posts (both offering my services and responding to requests) and local Facebook groups.
It worked so well, I’m not even taking on new clients anymore!

Remember, pet sitting is a rewarding experience, but it takes preparation and flexibility.
By following these tips, you’ll be ready to embark on your pet sitting adventure with confidence and a heart full of love for all things furry!
